Annual Walk-A-Thon

Besides striving to improve the working conditions of our members, Local 888 also makes a conscientious effort to give back to our members and the communities we serve. A few years ago Local 888 learned that Sickle Cell Anemia and Leukemia are diseases that affect various members and decided to do something about it.

In an effort to support our members Local 888 put together a 5-mile Walk-A-Thon. The purpose of this Walk-A-Thon is to raise money to aide in the research for a cure for Leukemia, Sickle Cell Anemia and Breast Cancer and bring awareness to these diseases. Proceeds from this event also help to finance the UFCW Local 888 Scholarship Fund.

Our Inaugural Walk-A-Thon in 2012 was a huge success largely due to our generous sponsors who lend their names and financial support to the cause and the tenacity of our members who participated, volunteered and brought the event to life.

Want to be a part of this great event? No Problem.

Walking is one way to participate but not the only way. Here are some suggestions on how to prepare for the Walk-A-Thon:

  1. Register: Register for the walkathon early! The registration fee is usually a few dollars less when you register early versus registering the day of the event, however both go toward the charitable cause. Be sure to talk to your Union Representative for the details on each year’s event and deadlines.
  2. Fundraising: If you cannot attend or if you are a SUPER MEMBER and would like to also fundraise to bring awareness to the Cause, you can also collect donations from loved ones. Many have created a fundraising page and shared it with friends, family, and coworkers to solicit donations. Set a fundraising goal and go after it!
  3. Prepare for the Walk: Depending on the length of the walkathon, make sure you have comfortable walking shoes, appropriate clothing for the weather, sunscreen, a hat, and a water bottle. Do not worry about your shirt, we will provide it for you when you check-in at the event.
  4. Arrive Early: On the day of the Walk-A-Thon, arrive early to check-in, pick up your event materials, and warm up. We will have some entertainment and activities before the walk begins.
  5. Walk and Enjoy: During the Walk-A-Thon, focus on enjoying the experience. Walk at your own pace, and don’t feel pressured to compete. Take in the scenery, chat with other members, and have fun.
  6. Stay Hydrated: Be sure to drink water throughout the walk to stay hydrated, especially on hot or sunny days. We will provide water at registration and along the route.
  7. Finish Line: Celebrate your achievement when you reach the finish line. YOU MADE IT! There will be refreshments, music, and activities waiting for you when you cross the finish line.
  8. Share Your Experience: After the Walk-A-Thon, share your experience on social media, with your co-workers and fellow members and thank your supporters for their donations. It’s a great way to raise awareness for the cause and express gratitude.

Don’t miss the next great opportunity to enjoy a beautiful day outside while helping others! The Local 888 Walk-A-Thon is a family-friendly event that includes live music, lunch and activities for children.

The Annual Walk-A-Thon is always held at the end of September at the Saddle River County Park Wild Duck Pond Area.

Let’s make this year’s Walk-A-Thon our best yet.
