UFCW Local 888 proudly supports the legislative education and advocacy of the Justice for Farmworkers Campaign. The Justice for Farmworkers Campaign (JFW) was created as a statewide educational and legislative movement aimed at giving farm workers the same rights that every other New York State worker receives. Over the last fifteen years, JFW has been at the forefront of the campaign to organize allies, educate the public and advocate for legislative change through the passage of the Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act.

The passage of New Deal legislation the 1930’s began a new chapter for workers’ rights in the United States.  Overshadowed by the discriminatory Jim Crow sentiment farm workers were excluded from the benefits of the New Deal. Seventy years have passed and in New York State Farm Workers still lack the rights to a day of rest, overtime pay and the right to bargain.

Some of the successes of the Legislative Campaign has granted farm workers the right to clean drinking water, sanitation facilities in the fields and the right to the same minimum wage as other workers.   Sadly exclusion of some of the most basis workers’ rights still remain. The Farm Workers Fair Labor Practices Act, a bill currently in the NY State Legislature, would remove these exclusions and grant farm workers the dignity and equality they deserve. Local 888 has been working with the Justice for Farm workers Campaign in order to help get justice for New York State farm workers and will be a part of the March for Farm Worker Justice starting from Smithtown, NY on Sunday, May 15, 2016.

Join the women and men who plant, tend and harvest your food as they seek greater self determination and equality in the workplace. Lets advocate for justice and protect human rights by supporting the FARM WORKERS FAIR LABOR PRACTICES ACT (A4762/S1291).
